Politicians justifies their decision by saying “100% of the people who talk about saving Kannada send their own children to English medium schools”.
Why do we send our children’s to private or English-medium schools?
For many decades, we voted uneducated, caste-based leaders and Politicians, who in-turn supported reservation to recruite half-skilled, less- passionate people to teach in government schools. Quality of education in Govt schools is so bad that poor parents take loan to send their children to private schools. It’s an heavy investment on education, so we need to think about Return On Investment (ROI). Reservation doesn’t allow you to get a Govt job and growing population limits your chance of employment in private sector. Education is a risky investment (Time & Money) so we choose good English-medium schools.
They go to school for knowledge on various subjects, not only to read\speak in English or Kannada. It’s not the communication skill that secure jobs in future, it’s the passion and depth of knowledge in subjects related to work.
How do you define education?
Education is like Planting a tree.
Planting a tree is a lifelong investment. How well this investment grows depends on the type of tree selected and the planting location, the care provided during planting, and the follow-up care after planting. Getting your new tree off to a healthy start will help the tree mature to its full size and ensures it will provide environmental, economic, and social benefits throughout its lifetime.
Root represents our regional languages, culture and history. Stem represents the depth of knowledge in Maths, Arts, Science and Technology (MAST – means easy going in Hindi). Branches are additional skills like global languages, domain\business knowledge and other nice to have skills. Leaves are daily knowledge gained from co-workers, social media, NEWS, Blogs etc.
Mr Rao says ‘English is necessary to secure job opportunities in the future’
Govt thinks English-medium will help but in reality this decision disrespects and damages the growth of Kannada, our identity. I was born in Uttar Pradesh, started my education in Kannada-medium and ended with English-medium. Neither languages helped me to secure my job. I had the interest to learn-work-earn, walked kms to apply for jobs and in the end luck favored me. Kannadigas and Non-kannadigas helped me to get started on my first job. Later, hands-on, self-taught habit helped me stay relevant and competent in my job.
English-medium won’t secure our jobs in future, millions of people are still unemployed with good communication skills (English). Encourage your kids to learn regional language in-depth in addition to global languages.
I’m not asking you to send your children to Kannada- medium schools, instead requesting you to vote educated people with passion to solve recurring problems with creative, innovative thoughts and protecting our culture, language and pride. What’s the qualification of Education Minister in your state?
After two decades, Spanish, Chinese, French may be mandatory to do business so we’ve to be flexible, learn on the go. But, for now learn, practice & protect what our traditionalist invented – CURL.
